WISER LIFE The WISER LIFE project has transformed the iconic Ballymun Boiler House into a 3-D textbook; a novel interactive experience and learning environment designed to stimulate curiosity in the natural, physical and cultural environment and promote sustainable living for the circular economy. Redesigning and re-purposing the iconic Ballymun Boiler House, an industrial land-mark and central heat source for generations of Ballymun residents, has given the space new life. The 3-D textbook is used to deliver environmental workshops and programmes for schools and the community and provide green services and products created on-site by an eco-cluster of waste reuse enterprises. Furthermore, WISER LIFE provides a test bed for new technologies developed by research groups, local start-ups and entrepreneurs. The 3-D textbook showcases an eco-friendly building methods, materials and design. This project presents the ultimate challenge: to redesign a building, originally constructed to dissipate heat and associated with an inefficient district heating scheme and to convert it to best practice energy management standards, incorporating innovative and experimental technologies and platforms that have the potential to educate and influence the behaviour of its visitors at a local, regional and European level. The project has been funded by the EU LIFE+ Programme, The Department of the Environment, Community and Local Government, Dublin City Council and The Rediscovery Centre. ABK Architects, who have considerable experience in sustainable development, was awarded the design contract and Purcell Construction awarded the construction contract.
