IoT LivingLab is a Social Enterprise with its first project leading the Cahersiveen IoT pilot programme that has become Europe’s first ever truly Interconnected Rural Town. The vision of the concept is to attract and increase footfall in Cahersiveen by creating a lab environment with relevant technologies covering the entire town for academia and enterprise to test their solutions. We are now on live with all the Enterprise level WiFi hardware equipment already erected and readily for usage. The project is a test bed for prototyping pre-market products and services. Universities and colleges have expressed interest in using the test bed for several case studies related to IoT. Some of the technologies we will also include BLE Beacons, RFID, NFC and Sensory pods that can identify and broadcast weather patterns, climate changes and CO2 emissions in real time. The phase 1 initiative was fully backed and funded by the Local Enterprise Office in Kerry, who generously allocated a first phase fund of €20,000 along with project partners from Relatelab and The Intelligent Mechatronics and RFID (iMaR), both are based in the Tom Crean Centre in IT Tralee. It has been a successful year and hopefully the living lab will be one of the major centres of IoT innovation in Ireland and Europe.
