Windmill Farm is situated in the small townland of Darver in County Louth on the Eastern side of the island of Ireland. Darver comes from the Gaelic word “Dairbhe” meaning “Oakwood“. Originally this area was fully covered by ancient oak forests which contribute to the rich subsoil that exists today. The Thornton family home and potato farm is strategically located to the North East of the ancient Hill of Tara. The Hill of Tara was first inhabited over 5,000 years ago and was the seat of the High Kings of Ireland. To the North East of the farm lies the renowned Mountains of Mourne, made famous in the Percy French song of the same name(“.. where the Mountains of Mourne sweep down to the sea..”) Written in 1896 it was recorded by Don McLean and Charlie King amongst others. This land is rich and fertile and sits on a deep base of limestone which provides an endless flow of clear natural spring water created by that unique ingredient – the famous Irish rain !
