The UCD Student Legal Service (SLS) is a voluntary society of law students providing access to free legal information through various initiatives including clinics, events, publications and online resources. The SLS endeavours to provide students with effective and accurate information pertaining to their legal rights and entitlements. Since its inception in 2006, the society has become a dynamic and influential organisation on the UCD campus, attracting a broad range of volunteers committed to both their own development as future legal practitioners and to assisting the wider student body. The SLS is unique in that everyone who gets involved, either by seeking legal information or by providing it, stands to gain substantially from doing so. In recent years, the SLS has firmly established itself as one of the most active and successful societies on campus with over 300 volunteers drawn from the UCD School of Law every year. The essence of our existence is observed in our legal information clinics, through which our dedicated volunteers ensure students and staff have access to a professional facility in which they can seek legal information on any issues facing them. In this way, the society plays a major role in contributing to the well-being of the UCD community. Other measures of the success of the SLS include the Student Legal Convention, competitions through which students can develop their practical legal skills such as the annual Negotiating Competition, and its annual publications which have achieved national acclaim, particularly from the Judiciary and the Academic community. The continued success of each of the society’s undertakings is a testament to the calibre of students who volunteer with the SLS and is also attributed to the much appreciated support we receive from sponsorship.
