The research is being carried out at NUI Galway, Ireland and being funded by a Commercialisation Fund from Enterprise Ireland. The team plan to spin out of NUI Galway in 2020 under NUA Surgical Limited. In December 2018, NUA Surgical was selected to take part in the inaugural LaunchPad Lift Powered by Techstars programme. LaunchPad Lift identifies top-performing University start-ups from across the LaunchPad global network of 20 Universities, and pairs them with resources and opportunities to help their ventures succeed. In September 2019, NUA Surgical was selected as a regional finalist (Connacht & Leinster) in the InterTradeIreland Seedcorn competition. In November 2019, Barry McCann, founder and CEO of NUA Surgical was named 'Best Senior Entrepreneur' at the EIT Health Alumni Needs-Led Innovation Showcase in Lisbon, Portugal. In June 2020, NUA Surgical was one of 16 start-up companies across the UK and Ireland to receive the EIT Health Headstart award of €40,000.
