We are a NUIG Society dedicated to understanding the financial world and imparting the knowledge to future generations. There’s no doubt that the world of finance is confusing. Coming out of one of the biggest financial crises known to humanity has implanted terms likes “banking failure”, “bust”, “subprime crash” in our heads but have done little to explain to us what they mean and how our generation should handle this economic stress and trauma. Through the Guest Lecture Series, we have had some of the best minds in finance and economics enlighten us about these issues from political, professional and academic standpoints. One crucial outcome of the Finance Society is that we produce a knowledgeable and skilful millennial generation as heirs to both the domestic and international political, economic and financial landscapes. On a personal level, the society has begun to prepare students for a leap into professional life. Contrary to the stereotype, careers in finance do not (always) mirror scenes from the Wolf of Wall Street. Endorsements from firms like Ernst & Young, PwC and Deutsche Bank have taught us that alongside technical skills, employers want the soft transferable skills that involvement in the Finance Society nurtures in students. This is not specific to financial firms but indeed to all potential employers and this is reflected in our diverse membership encompassing students from all disciplines. Whether you are a physicist wishing to pursue a career in investment banking, an engineer wanting to manage your personal portfolio or a philosopher trying to get to grips with economic jargon and acronyms – there is a place in the Finance Society for you.
