The Oblate Youth Service is a group of young volunteers who work with the sick in Lourdes, participate in projects in Africa as well as engaging with more local volunteer work in Ireland and the UK. Outlined below is a brief summary of some of the projects Oblate Youth Service members are engaged with. Lourdes 70 to 80 Oblate Youth Service members travel as part of the Oblate Pilgrimage to Lourdes every September. While in Lourdes OYS members are tasked with a number of responsibilities during a working day. These include helping with the transport of sick pilgrims from the hospital to various ceremonies, assisting sick pilgrims at mealtimes, bringing sick pilgrims into Lourdes town, for coffee or souvenir shopping, looking after sick pilgrims, their personal belongings, clothing etc, and spending time with the sick, in conversation. African Projects Since 2002, members of the Oblate Youth Service have participated in social and building projects in Kenya, South Africa and Zimbabwe. These projects normally involve 3 - 4 members of the OYS spending one to two summer months in Africa. World Youth Day WYD is a youth-oriented international event that takes place every two to three years. The event is a celebration of Catholic Faith among the world’s youth. World Youth Day was initiated by Pope John Paul II in 1985 with the first encounter being held in Rome in 1986. There have been a total of 12 International World Youth Days since 1986 and the Oblate Youth Service has been involved since WYD 2000. Local Projects On a more local level Oblate Youth Service members participate in various projects including the Oblate Youth Summer Camp in North Wales, a Faith Friends project in Dublin as well as House Decorating projects. The emphasis of the Oblate Youth Service is of ‘service’ to those in need, and that is the reality that members of the group try to live as they volunteer in OYS projects.
